Faculty Feature: Q&A with Stephen Wilson
Stephen Wilson is a Professor in the Materials Department at UC Santa Barbara and teaches ENG 412B: Foundational Quantum Mechanics II in the METL program. He is also Co-Principal Investigator at the UC Santa Barbara Quantum Foundry. Dr. Wilson's current research interests include studies of phase behavior in strongly correlated electron/quantum materials, new states in spin orbit coupled matter, and harnessing many-body electronic states in functional materials.
What drew you to teaching in the METL program?
I think METL is an exciting focus for combined leadership and technical training in topics that UCSB excels in--so it is a great way to help UCSB to show off. In quantum science, the traditional academic focus is typically on a number seemingly unconnected foundational courses, so teaching in METL was a refreshing opportunity to contribute to something focused toward a rapidly evolving quantum-based industry. Being part of a group that could synthesize fundamental coursework in a way that is relevant to this new industry was compelling.
How has your work evolved along with industry trends and new research?
My own research has evolved with the growing importance or relevance of quantum-based industry. Some of the more esoteric research questions or materials that we explore were suddenly increasingly relevant to an industry looking to launch near-term technologies. I would also say that some of our research directions have also pivoted to exploring materials that we wouldn't have looked at otherwise due to a growing technological need identified by quantum industry.
What would you say to a student who is on the fence about taking this course?
This particular course is foundational to really understanding many of the key concepts in quantum information science that are introduced later on. Quantum mechanics has an overwhelming number of weird concepts and consequences, so calibrating yourself on the right ones early is important. It's also important to ensure that you speak the right language in terms of these concepts going forward in the program.
