Technology Management Track Overview

Technology Management is a multidisciplinary field that examines the opportunities and challenges of technological innovation, industry disruption, and organizational change, and their influence on business performance and competitive advantage. The Technology Management Track of the METL  program provides students the skills and knowledge to apply data analytics in decision making, to work with intelligent machines to solve challenging problems, to organize and manage technology teams in the unique environment of a technology-driven firm, and to apply an entrepreneurial mindset to identify and capitalize on new business opportunities.The Technology Management track is specifically designed for individuals with a keen interest in the application of technology in a business environment. Common profiles of applicants includes:

  • Technical Contributors: Current science and technology professionals working in technical roles who wish to broaden their knowledge and skills to include topics related to the intersection of business, technology and innovation

  • Technology Leaders: Early- to mid-career professionals already working in technology leadership roles who would like to expand their management toolkit through technical and business upskilling

  • Entrepreneurs: Technical professionals who would like to either start their own venture or get involved in launching and scaling a new venture but feel they need more understanding of the business of technology


Specialized Career Paths

The Technology Management track is designed to prepare students for leadership and technical careers, including:

  • Technology Leadership Roles: Technical contributors often move into more leadership oriented roles such as leading an innovation team, leading a team of technical contributors, or roles in product/project management following the program

  • Technology Management Roles: Graduates move from technical roles to more business oriented roles that build on their technical background and the skills developed during the program. Examples of these kinds of roles include technology consultant, business development professional, or technology analyst

  • Technology Entrepreneur: Following the program, graduates are well positioned for roles in either technology entrepreneurship or corporate venturing where they focus on developing business models, product ideation, and seeking funding in order to launch or lead new technology based businesses


Required Background and Qualifications

To qualify for the Technology Management track, applicants should ideally possess a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience. Other requirements include:

  • STEM-Related Undergraduate Degree: The program is primarily intended for students with a first degree in a STEM-related field broadly defined or equivalent professional experience in a technology-related role

  • Background: Foundational undergraduate-level knowledge in finance, business strategy and marketing as well as some experience in programming in python is recommended for this track. However, online upskilling courses are available for students lacking one or more of these and can be completed before beginning the program
